James Casey’s battle with colon cancer commenced unexpectedly in 2021, when he was only 39 years old. The diagnosis came as a shock after a performance in Colorado alongside Bill Kreutzmann’s band, Billy & The Kids.

In 2021, Casey underwent emergency surgery to remove a sizable tumor from his colon. A stage 3 diagnosis revealed that the cancer had extended to nearby lymph nodes but had not yet reached other organs.
